ICAP Community Service – MLK Day 2019

In honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s 90th birthday, ICAP volunteers staffed a pop up grocery center at the R.I.S.E. (Relate, Innovate, Stimulate and Elevate) Demonstration Center in Washington, D.C. through a partnership with Martha’s Table.

Rolling up their sleeves and welcoming folks in need with warm smiles, ICAP fellows and friends helped fill and distribute more than 500 bags of fresh produce. In total, volunteers served 600+ folks with healthy food and provided them important information on additional food, education, and clothing assistance offered by Martha’s table at no cost. In addition, volunteers engaged kids through arts and crafts honoring Dr. King’s dream for racial equality, economic rights, and harmony.

Afterwards, ICAP fellows and friends reflected on and celebrated their service at a happy hour hosted by ICAP Alumni Association Board Member Ambassador Gina Abercrombie-Winstanley (ret.).

Honoring Ambassador Abercrombie-Winstanley

In late November 2017, the year of ICAP’s 20th anniversary, in the State Department’s exquisitely decorated “Treaty Room”, friends and colleagues gathered to mark the diplomatic career of Amb. Gina Abercrombie-Winstanley.

The Flag Ceremony marks the close out of an Ambassadorship and career. It was officiated by Deputy Secretary of State John Sullivan who presented the ceremonial Ambassador’s flag. It also marked the career of one of ICAP’s first participants, Amb. Abercrombie-Winstanley, who was joined by ICAP fellows from subsequent classes; 5-10 classes were represented.
